The shape of an egg is extremely respected in the celestial seas as a symbol of birth, new life, and beginnings, so it's only natural that these cut and tumbled crystalized dragon bones are made to resemble them. They're especially useful as wells of magic for those adept in the crystal aspect or those seeking to create enchantments, but there's no reason to suggest they couldn't also be used as containers themselves — whether for the caster's own magic, or perhaps even a soul. The facets take on the color of the soul or essence of whatever the crystal contains. Though they're technically edible, nothing about them provides any real material sustenance; the raw magical energy, on the other hand, can be highly addictive.
