“Clara?”

One of the diner’s patrons calls her name, and Clara looks over to them. They’re an older human fellow, wizened by age and unfamiliar to her. She knows most regulars by name (and in turn those regulars know hers), but this person? She doesn’t know.

“Just a second, hun,” she calls back to them, because she’s pouring coffee for a different customer who needs good service with a smile. Shortly after that, an order’s called out, and Clara takes that to a different table, and then another person snags her to order soft serve ice cream, and someone else wants hash browns, and oh, why is this diner always so busy?

When her memory finally catches up to her and she goes over to that older patron, they’re folding something with shaking hands that beget that age. “Howdy,” Clara says, pulling out her notepad and pen. “Sorry bout that wait! Morning rush. What can I do for you?

The stranger looks up at her with doleful eyes, seemingly searching for something in her expression. “Do you know who I am?”

Clara blinks, leaning in slightly to study their face. “Have you come in before? I’m so sorry, I usually remember customers!”

“No, no,” the stranger says. “It’s my first time here.”

“Oh!” She shifts from foot to foot, biting her lip as she tries to remember. “Awww, shucks, I’m sorry. I really don’t recall.”

“That’s… that’s okay. Thank you. I’ll just have some coffee.”

Clara smiles apologetically and fills their mug with coffee, and then she’s immediately swept away by another tidal wave of orders. So many folks in from the rain—they really need to get her a fellow server so she’s not so all over the place all the time.

It’s not until later, when Clara returns to that elderly stranger’s table, that she finds payment for the coffee, a tip, and a painstakingly folded origami butterfly. Written on one wing are the words, ‘Goodbye, Clara.’

Clara is overcome with the strangest sense of deja vu as she picks the paper creature up. She gets the feeling that she could fold something like this, that she has folded something like this.

Someone calls her name, and she tucks the butterfly into her apron to ruminate upon later. She’s got work to do!
