Of all the creatures that populate the celestial seas, the most elusive and mysterious may be the mighty dragon. Spoken of as if purely mythological, these astral beings are less like people and more like natural phenomena, an extension of space and magic itself.

Dragons are impossibly large and swim through the astral oceans like a seamless undercurrent in the sea, difficult to encounter and even harder to talk to. It’s said that they’re not so much individual as they are a living limb of the universe, part of the magical ecosystem on such a grand scale that it’s hard to reduce them to just one thing.

There are a plethora of legends and myths that imply the possibility for a dragon to project their consciousness through the Celestial Seas, approaching others in visions or dreams in order to communicate with them. Other such stories say that dragons can simply shapeshift, physically traversing the seas to observe or interact with denizens for reasons only they could ever know. Whether they appear in their draconic form or something less conspicuous, the ever increasing amount of tales make it hard to doubt that these encounters are impossible. Meeting a dragon would be a truly unforgettable moment — if someone even knew they were speaking with a dragon, that is.

Draw or write about your character as a dragon or encountering a dragon

✦ If they’re in the form of a dragon, what do they look like? Do they have wings for flying, or are they more of a streamlined swimmer? Does their magic manifest around them in any special way? What makes them stand out from other dragons?

✦ Is the transformation natural to them? Did it happen in a dream? What does it feel like for your character to undergo this transformation — is it painful, or is it like slipping into a familiar form?

✦ Maybe your character is encountering a dragon. How do they feel witnessing such a rare and special moment? Are they in awe? Disbelief? Or is the idea of being dwarfed by such a powerful beast of nature a little terrifying? Is this happening in a dream, or is it reality? And if it is a dream, what does it mean?

Is there an important message the dragon wants to impart, or is it simply for their amusement? What would motivate a creature as old and vast as a dragon to appear in front of your character?

✦ Perhaps it’s a dragon that triggers your own character’s transformation. Does your character have any ties to dragons — whether spiritually, magically, or otherwise? What would your character be thinking and feeling in the moment?

The dragon soars overhead in a kaleidoscope of gorgeous colors, lighting up the night sky. Its scales glitter and spark as they streak across a starry backdrop. The city lights are low, so that everyone can see without too much trouble. It’s customary, as a dragon is passing, to make a wish for things to come. This dragon falls auspiciously at the turn of the new year, when wishes are most hopeful and the future is bright.

As the beast passes, celestial citizens hunt all across New Centuary for colorful scale fragments. They’re said to bring good luck, and make wishes come true! Inscribing one’s wish on the back of a large enough scale means their desire is all but guaranteed. It’s a great time for reflection, and for looking forward.

There is nothing as universally awkward as a blind date, but some of the greatest relationships are spawned from such encounters. Whether it’s an introduction through a friend of a friend or a speed dating event, first dates come in all shapes and sizes! Most of them don’t lead to romance — most of them don’t even lead to a second date — but of the ones that do, you’ll always have a fun story to tell. Sometimes, someone you met on a blind date might turn out to be the perfect friend! Other times, it’s such an insufferable bore that you have to make up an excuse to escape death by boredom. Whatever it is, the time for singles to mingle is approaching, whether you like it or not!

Draw or write about your character going on a blind date.

✦ Do they make any special effort to change their appearance beforehand? Is there a signature look for dates that they’ve had to use one too many times? Maybe they’re excited, or maybe they’re nervous.

Dating sims have had a surge in popularity in the celestial seas. Handsome browbirds, dashing satyrs, and gorgeous kitbulls all feature in this vast genre of video games, with some even spawning dedicated fandoms and spin offs for years to come. Of course, the completionists will attempt to get every possible ending for their favorite character, but at the end of the day, all dating sims ask the same question: will you get the good ending and live happily ever after with the partner of your dreams, or will you get the bad ending and be doomed to a love that cannot last?

Draw or write about your character playing a dating sim or in a dating sim! They can be romanceable, an NPC, or the protagonist!

✦ What’s the setting of the game? A horror romance with vampires haunting a dark castle? A deep sea romance with merpeople and deep sea monsters? A kingdom of handsome yet tortured princes? Or maybe it’s a mundane, everyday game, such as a university setting or a new neighborhood.

From candy grams to personalized valentines, this time of year is a time of giving to your loved ones. A store bought box of chocolates will convey a very different meaning from a heartfelt, scrapbooked love letter. The act of gifting is not seen as juvenile or something you should grow out of in Celestial Seas! There is nothing more celebrated when that special day rolls around each year than love and a personal dedication to showing it. The more heartfelt, the better!

DRAWING: Create a valentine themed around your character, or an in-character valentine they would make for someone else.

WRITING: Create a love letter addressed to or written by your character.

✦ Is it a mess of hot glue and glitter, or is it a glitzy box of truffles from a high end chocolatier? Are there drawings of them and their loved one, platonic or romantic, or have they opted for photographs instead?

✦ Does your character have a crafty hobby that would make the gift more personal? Maybe it’s a specially handknit sweater or a whittled figure that reminded them of their valentine. A mug glazed with hearts, a painting of them together, a mixtape with their favorite songs… The possibilities are endless!

✦ Is your character the type to write love letters? Would they pour their heart out in poetic metaphor, or are they more restrained? Maybe the act of writing this letter is difficult for them if they’re not used to emotional vulnerability, or maybe it’s something that makes them smile. Either way, it has to be absolutely perfect!

  • Must be at least 25% of one character or 75% of a companion
  • Background optional
  • Must be at least a clean sketch + clean shading/details, OR a rough sketch with rough color!

✦ For written submissions:

  • Must be at least 200 words
  • Must clearly be about or from the perspective of the character
  • Feel free to retell a funny story using your characters!
